Shows I Am Watching On Netflix

Graphic Tees

Earlier this year I had cancelled my Netflix subscription. I wasn't watching much television and also I wanted to be more mindful of my screen time. I have been wanting to be more intentional with everything I do, so why not what I watch as well. So when I heard that some of my favorites shows (Afterlife, Kim's Convenience) were back with their next season I decided to get back on Netflix for a month (or so) till I am done watching those shows. I am not bingeing them any more either. I am happy to watch for a couple of hours and then pick it up again the following day. Might I add, I am mighty proud of myself for finding this balance. Long story short, I am almost done with these shows and might be pausing the membership again soon.

Below are the shows that I have been enjoying or have in the past:

Friends From College

Description: Years after becoming friends at Harvard, Ethan, Lisa, Sam, Nick, Max and Marianne are heading into a new era -- their 40s. This series delves into interwoven and complicated relationships, including former romantic entanglements and comedic explorations of old bonds. As everyone tries to manage their lives as adults, they also experience nostalgia.

Why you should watch it: It might not be everyone's cup of coffee. And to be honest I don't think it was much well received but I happen to love it. The show tests the audience on how it reacts to an array of unlikable characters and situations that might not always culminate in big laughs. It is just emotional enough to see certain characters in a different light, and it's just funny enough to almost let their questionable behavior slide.

Derry Girls

Description: Following Erin and her friends as they grow up in a world of armed police in armored Land Rovers and British Army check points in 1990s Northern Ireland and attempt to navigate the highs and lows of being teenagers.

Why you should watch it: Derry Girls hits the emotional intersection of cringe, earnestness, and slapstick. The magic of this show is in the way it allows its teenage girls (and James) to experience the embarrassing indignities and awkwardness of being teens, through its story of growing up in extraordinary times and trying to not let those extraordinary times negate a teenager’s right to live a hilariously ordinary life.

Dead To Me

Description: It is an American black comedy that stars Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini as two grieving women who bond during therapy.

Why you should watch it: Its mystery could have been a little sharper and its story-line a little more taut, but Applegate and Cardellini embrace that morbid sense of humor and manage to make viewers laugh about death. Is Dead to Me the perfect crime drama? No. But is it really entertaining and the perfect binge show? YES!

Working Moms

Description: As the name states, it is about a group of friends dealing with the challenges of being working mothers.

Why you should watch it: I am not a mom so I can't speak to its accuracy but I can speak to its entertainment value. It has its problems (privilege ahem!) but ... it has its moments. If anything, it makes me feel good about my decision to be childfree *shrug*.

I’m Sorry

Description: Andrea Savage (obsessed with her!) created and stars in this comedy as writer, wife and mom Andrea, whose outward confidence belies an inner immaturity and neuroses that manifests in unexpected ways. Alongside her more straitlaced husband, Mike, and their inquisitive daughter Amelia, Andrea does her best to navigate her life's oftentimes self-induced complications.

Why you should watch it It's refreshing to watch a show about a woman that doesn't rely on female-protagonist tropes. Despite being unabashedly vulgar, I really admire Andrea. She is a fantastic mom and daughter, a devoted friend, and she has one of the healthiest on-screen relationships on tv. I cannot understand why this show doesn't get more attention. I like it. And if you're not easily offended, give it a couple of episodes and you just might like it, too.

Schitt’s Creek

Description: In the sitcom "Schitt's Creek," a wealthy couple -- video store magnate Johnny and his soap opera star wife Moira -- suddenly find themselves completely broke. With only one remaining asset, a small town called Schitt's Creek, which the Roses bought years earlier as a joke, this once-wealthy couple must give up life as they know it. With their two spoiled children in tow and their pampered lives behind them, the Rose family is forced to face their newfound poverty head-on and come together as a family to survive.

Why you should watch it: It is witty, warm, and with just the right blend of wisdom and wisecracks. The quality of the show gets better with every season and we are left surprised how it's possible to improve on perfection. So beautifully written and amazingly executed. Each and every character in the show is brilliant, the character development is brilliant. I am now bereft having binge watched all five series and having to wait until probably October for the release of sixth and final.

Kim’s Convenience

Description: While running a convenience store in Toronto, members of a Korean-Canadian family deal with customers, each other and the evolving world around them.

Why you should watch it: This is what I'd call a wholesome family entertainment. I love the diversity of the characters. The funny parts are interspersed with touching moments and some serious topics sprinkled in. It is one of those rare intelligent comedies which continues to be funny and relevant season after season. The show fulfills a much-needed gap in storytelling: immigrant family life that delivers laugh-out-loud moments without trying to prove that we're all one big happy family.

Description: Tony had a perfect life -- until his wife Lisa died. After that tragic event, the formerly nice guy changed. After contemplating taking his life, Tony decides he would rather live long enough to punish the world by saying and doing whatever he likes.

Why you should watch it: After Life has its funny moments but it is more drama than comedy, taking seriously its exploration of loss, depression and the resilience of optimism. If you've not seen it, consider it a must-see, even for those who are not fans of Gervais.

Cheers to the weekend, whatever that means in the times of COVID 🤷🏻‍♀️😄
