On our recent trip to Madrid ,Spain, we decided to spend a day in Toledo which is located in central Spain, 70 km south of Madrid. It is also a World Heritage Site declared by UNESCO in 1986 for its extensive cultural and monumental heritage. It is known as the "Imperial City" for having been the main venue of the court of Charles I, and as the "City of the Three Cultures", having been influenced by a historical co-existence of Christians, Muslims and Jews.
It about an hour and a half drive or bus ride, but we took the train from Atocha Station which is every hour starting at 7:00 am on weekdays and 9:00 on weekends and holidays. Its last train back to Madrid leaves Toledo between 7:00 pm weekdays and 9:30 pm weekends. The train costs 10,60€ for a one way ticket and 19,10€ for a roundtrip which we thought was pretty reasonable.
Toledo was perfect for a day trip. Its ancient history and architecture was quite enthralling. It is ideal if you have a day to spare while you are in Madrid. You could get away from the city life into the old city charm, relish some Spanish cuisine and shop local artifacts. Below are some snaps from my visit. Enjoy!
