Reader's Request
I know that I have been giving a lot of fashion advice lately ... like here, here, and here, Phew! [Right!?!] Well in my defense, people asked me and now you all are stuck with this post [:P] Blame 'em!
And for people who do not what a Kurti is? ... It is otherwise known as a Tunic in the western world, and is a traditional piece of clothing for most South Asians specially in Indian Sub-Continent. They are designed to fit loosely and women mostly wear them with jeans.
Though a reader asked to me to tell her a few ways to style a Kurti but there are not very many options in the styles that a Kurti comes in, hence the only way to style them differently would be either with:
- different types of bottoms
- with different accessories
- and my favorite - SHOES!
However, one of the critical points to focus upon wearing a Kurti would be your body type. If you are:

Kurtis mostly comes in three lengths:1) Waist lengthNot for - Pear and Apple2) Ending right below the hipsNot for - Pear and Hour glass3) Ending about few inches above kneesNot for - Cone and Rectangle
Now we cannot possibly have a post without my pictures, now can we?
So here's how I have worn Kurtis a several times in the last year!
Updated: Inky Pinky asked the difference between a Kurta and a Kurti in the comments below - As she pointed out, in my understanding as well the ones with shorter lengths are called Kurtis and the ones which goes all the way down till the calfs are called Kurtas and are worn both, by men and women.
purely out of comfort especially in Delhi summers I like a loose salwar the best with a kurti, and my eyes quite obviously choose the blue on you as well, I mean as a style, that's my fave :)
ReplyDeleteTanvi, I like ur looks and styling but was wondering if u cud touch upon the subtle difference between a kurta and a kurti...my understanding is kurti is mostly short to be worn like a top unlike a kurta which goes with salwars or leggings. Correct me if I'm wrong ! :)

Very informative!!
ReplyDeleteI really like the diagram of the shapes..I finally know what my shape is and how they determine in...Like I always thought I was ROUND (so borring) but now I know I'm an APPLE :-p Not any better though!
You look radiant in all photos! Muah
You look gorgeous in the kurtis! But I am very bad with body shapes... looking at your photos I can't tell what kind of body shape you are and I don't know what body shape I am either! :S I have tried wearing kurtis in the past, and the waist length ones don't suit me much, so maybe I am a Pear or Apple. I think you make the kurtis come alive with all the bright pops of color :)
ReplyDelete♥ Leia
As always you rocked every looked babe! And I think bright colored cotton kurtis as the perfect antidote for the sweltering Indian summers.......be it paired with denims, shorts, capris, leggings or salwars! :)
ReplyDeletenicely done, very illustrative and informative :)
ReplyDeleteYou rock the kurti, Tanvi! Like Leia, I have no idea what body shape I am. I love the longer ones with the tight, ruched ankle leggings underneath like the trendy Mumbai girls wear but always feel a bit swamped in them. xxx
ReplyDeleteYou carry every look off with style. I love these outfits.
ReplyDeleteAs you know, I'm studying female-clothing of other societies and this is exactly the kind of information I'm looking for. You're a great cross-cultural resource.

ReplyDeleteI love the variety of the post! so many options with a kurti. I like wearing mine with skirts :)
ReplyDeleteI'm having a giveaway on my blog for a pretty ring from bobbins & bits if you'd like to check it out. :) x

ReplyDeleteGreat article. Always understood kurti above knee, Kurta below knee but both names seem to be used for either. What would be great would be advice on best style for older women. I am an hourglass (though overweight) but am also short, under 5', and over 50yrs old. I usually wear a calf length with 3/4 sleeves but was wondering if a shorter length would be OK in warmer weather. Most of mine have the side split though some are A-line but I think the anarkarli would be too much for me. Any advice because I can't be the only one with this problem.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.
