This is the latest 'Item Number' to hit the Hindi Movie scene, after Munni Badnaam. Let me explain the concept of 'Item Number' in our movies to my Non-Desi readers...
To begin with, firstly Indian movies are not musicals. Song and dance is simply a format of story telling that we have adopted and now learnt to love [read: can't live without!]. Like Hollywood we too have commercial cinema and Indie movies [which we refer to as Art Cinema]. Most commercial movies have an 'item number' which essentially means a song with peppy beats and easy to grasp lyrics which might not make any sense but they sure feel good to sing along and dance to. More often than not these songs would have provocative dance moves and tongue-in-cheeks lyrics which would be a big 'taboo' in our otherwise conservative society but since its in the form of a peppy-song-number - it'll fly!
Anyhoo, I am no moral police in this matter. In fact me and Mr. Fabulous love such songs. We call them Chheechoora Songs [loose translation would be Ghetto songs] and often dance to them and have a party of two at our place. We really do not need anyone else - Just US and some Item Numbers! ;)
So what's that got to do with my outfit? Nothing! I just get inspired to dance in Indian clothes when I hear such songs. I have been doing this since high school but have documented it only once on the blog previously here!
Oh wow Tanvi. First time I have seen you wearing a saree. Are you a saree person? It suits you. You are looking fabulous- just as the title of your blog says. Is it a Satya Paul Saree? Me like it.
ReplyDeleteOh woowww!! You loo so pretty in the saree! You should wear it more often! I wish I could drape it :(
ReplyDeleteAnd the saree is lovely too!

ReplyDeleteI adore this! You look gorgeous, I wish I could wear a sari, I would just look stupid, like that woman who crashed the White House party and now is on Real Housewives of DC! I got your Christmas card, and I LOVE it! I was so touched, I put it on our refrigerator! And just so you know, mine is not in response to yours, I already had you on my list, lol! I just love blogging! XX!
ReplyDeleteohMYGODDDDDDDDDDD. I'm going to ....thud.... [faint]
ReplyDelete:D
ReplyDeleteOh you just look sooooo beautiful! For me, a woman in a sari looks so sensual, so regal... you just look divine honey.
I describe Indian movies as having music videos scattered amongst the story... I find it odd that prior to being told that, non Indian cinema watchers don't realise that basically... all music videos are like Indian movies!!
You look sooooooooo pretty in a sari! (DO NOT read it to mean you don't look pretty in the rest of your wardrobe, just that saris bring out so much femininity--it's hard to explain, you know what I mean!)
ReplyDeletenice sari and nice do tanvi.......me loves item numbers too....
ReplyDeleteTanvi, you look gorgeous!
ReplyDeletevery nice... why have we seen sarees in only bright colors? ur saree is beautiful! n u could well be a bollywood item.

That drape looks lovely on you babe!!! You sure look hotter than Katrina! :)
ReplyDeleteYour explanation of Indian cinema is just apt. I mean seriously can you imagine a good peppy without some jhatka matkas. Not that I don't like serious cinema.
ReplyDeleteTanvi, I know this may sound redundant but you look absolutely gorgeous! You are such a natural.
One question from a dummie ;)
What kohl do you apply? How do you prevent it from smudging? I love applying kohl but if apply it outside my lower lash line, I look like "dangerous" after an hour, it just smudges so much. Please help if you can!
WOW, i'm totally blown away by your outfit, i think this is a first Sari on the blog, no?
ReplyDeleteYou look really gorgeous and i can just see you and the mr. dancing away!

Tsnvi,
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately Hindi cinema is losing its artistic touch. Music and lyrics are foundation of Hind movies but with songs like these (as you say cheap songs) make us wonder the direction of Hindi cinema.
Only saving grace is that we still have good songs and singers like Shreya, Shankar Mahadevan. Also some recent movies e.g. Break ke Baad is good though a total failure at box office. I cannot understand why. May be there is no item number in that movie.
You look GORGEOUS.

Ahh I love this! I grew up with an Indian girl my whole childhood and I just grew to love the culture. And now I just adore the dancing and the music. This is how I feel about Latin music - I hear a song and I go crazy. I don't need anyone to join me in my dance party :)
ReplyDeleteYou look amazing. You have such a teeny little body!

ReplyDeleteYou look very nice in your saree. : D
Gorgeous. You look absolutely beautiful in that saree, and I love the earrings.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the information about the "item numbers". Being a bit of a cinephile, I've noticed those in movies before, but never knew the reasoning behind them. They are fun though, and always remind me quite a bit of some Serbian music too (which I know is sometimes inspired by other cultures)! lol
You are one adorable desi girl. Lovely saree and it suits you well.
ReplyDeleteYou look gorgeous! I absolutely love your saree! And that video is fabulous. Catchy indeed :)
ReplyDeletegorgeous!
ReplyDeleteWow, very pretty!!!!
ReplyDeleteSo once I was told that in Indian movies they don't kiss, ever. Is that true?
Also, I am loving this Modern Indian Music...(Sorry I honestly don't know the difference between Indian, Hindi(a religion?) etc. I should learn more!) BUT I love the music! I haven't heard or watched modern Indian movies ever. Except there was a few years ago...I'll try to think of what it was...
Oh, and if you want to explain all of the differences I'd love that! lol
