Lacking A Basic Skill

Sail To Sable Tweed Dress Tanvii.com

Ladies and gentleman - believe it or not - it has recently come to my attention that I do not know how to talk. You might wonder, "Who doesn't know how to talk?" You'd be surprised to know that actually most people don't. But let's keep this about me. So among the long list of personal shortcomings I have yet another one to add to the list.

It was not until I started doing the podcast that I realized that "talking" is now one of the many skills I need to work on. We record the podcast weekly, which involves listening to my own voice several times during the week *cringe*. It was not an activity which I did on regular basis and if I am being honest, I never really liked listening to my own voice. However, after listening to myself talk week after week for last three months or so, I have learned that I do not speak in full sentences. I jump from one incomplete thought to another, leaving the listener to fill-in-the-blanks. I use the same words over-and-over-again. My enthusiasm for a topic sometimes hinders my ability to express myself succinctly. (Just to name a few) Sigh!

I am seriously contemplating taking a coaching class/course to work on 'talking properly'. It just seems embarrassing that after thirty six years of existence, in spite of college education and a healthy habit of reading, I still cannot do something which should be part of the basic skill set. But like they say, it is never too late to learn something ... so this is now my new goal: to be able to speak in full sentences, epigrammatically

  1. Fascinating introspection. While I'd say (with knowledge) that you're exaggerating because I've heard you speak in person, we can all improve in this area. I know I can and am aware of my own deficiencies. Good for you to address this and strive to improve it.

  7. You are much braver than me! I hate listening to myself talk because I'm also a bit incoherent. So much better at writing!

  8. You already know I love this tweed dress!

And is it weird that I thought this post was hilarious? It's crazy how one can be so great at writing and so well read, but still have some trouble with talking. I'm in the same boat. This is why I tend not to speak in my Instastories. I'm working on that, too, lol.

  10. I had never thought about if I communicate in complete sentences. I really don't think I do either. This gave me some unintentional awareness in a good way.

  17. These pictures are beautiful! As for the lack of talking.. is that not something our current world has kind of bought onto us? I love serving and talkinng to customers but many don't want to engage and often people in other stores seem to go out of their way to not talk. Having to listen to your own voice can be really hard and cringey but I am sure you sound fine!

  23. Self-improvement is another way of investing in yourself. If you really feel that coaching will help you with your confidence in speaking in front of an audience, don't hesitate!

  26. I think that bettering yourself is going to be a really positive thing, its not that you can't talk it's just projecting what you want to say to others is exciting and you are passionate about what you speak about. You got this Tanvi!
