5 Steps I’m Taking to Improve My Well-Being This Year

Thank you Nokia for sponsoring this post. Visit the Nokia Body+ site for more info and start the new year off right!

I have not made any resolutions for almost a decade now. I choose to set intentions for each year and then find ways to fulfill them over the course of the year. This year my intention is to 'slow down' and take stock of everything I have in my life. This year I plan to focus on my mental health, over all well being and make changes in order to support my lifestyle for the next few decades.

Research shows that, one in four people globally will experience a mental health issue at some point in his or her life. Mental health affects how we think, feel and act on a daily basis, as well as influences how we handle stress, make decisions and connect with others. I am in my mid-thirties would like to check my actions and habits now, before it gets harder.

I am set on making improvements this year, and here are five steps I am taking to improve my well-being this year:

  • Learning new things - While growing up I used to love taking classes and learning new skills and activities. Some time over the last decade, I stopped doing that. This year I plan to take a dance class, new workouts that I have not tried before and read books which are out of my comfort genre. Learning something new has shown to give one a sense of achievement and a new confidence.

  • Drink water - Every year I commit to be diligent about my water intake and every year I lose track of it after a few months. This year I am keeping a journal of my water intake. My goal is to drink a minimum 90 ounces or half of my body weight in ounces.
  • Being mindful - My last year's word was 'intentional'. The goal was to be more aware of the present moment, including my thoughts and feelings, my body and the world around me. This awareness is also known as "mindfulness" in popular culture. It has positively changed the way I feel about life and how I approach challenges. I hope to continue being mindful ...
  • Not be too hard on myself - I have been known to be quite a harsh critic of myself. Earlier I used it as a tool of motivation, however I realized that I probably need to reanalyze my way of thinking
"The negative emotions we create by being overly hard on ourselves not only erode our happiness, but change our physiology. Beating up on yourself actually narrows your peripheral vision so that, both metaphorically and literally, you can see less opportunity to address your challenges, fix your mistakes, and create the opportunities you want." - Margie Warrell author of Brave

  • Eat, sleep, exercise - Maintaining a work-life balance is my biggest struggle. Over the last five years I have noticed a stark difference in my metabolism, stamina, ability to bounce back from ailments, and how hard it is to lose those extra pounds I gain during my travels. My plan for 2018 is to be accountable for my workouts, eating habits and sleep. I am going back to basics and maintaining a daily food log, exercise journal and set get a minimum of seven hours of sleep daily. One of the tools I am using to assist me with this goal is the Nokia Body+

It is not just a scale to weigh on - it is a body analyzer! It measures weight trends, BMI, fat mass, muscle mass, water, and bone mass. Body+ syncs automatically with the Health Mate app which lets you view a complete history of your health data, including activity, sleep, weight. 1. After reading your post, I really get motivated and wanted to follow your footstep too! One of the thing I wanted to achieve is getting a leaner abs and eating clean is not easy! It is great to learn that you have a a Nokia and Nokia body tool to help you keep track. I wish to have something like too.

  2. In this hurly burly crazy world we all need to take better care of ourselves (says she, who spends more time working out on my laptop butt than actually getting out there and doing something that feeds my soul). UGH, the wellness app sounds great, especially since my mobile is always right there next my ever expanding laptop butt :D I'll have to give it a try
