Joy of Breaking Your Own Rules

Lately, I have been getting out of my own way and letting myself be. I had spent better part of the last decade working on a routine for my mind, body and lifestyle. A routine that helped me keep my life together for all these years without going insane.

I am was a creature of habit and discipline, I can't believe that, instead I have spent this last year breaking those same habits and letting myself lose. Something was not feeling right. I had started to feel like a prisoner of my own mind. Everything that I had worked on to make life easier had started to feel like an obligation I had to keep. I couldn't figure out what needed to change, so I started changing one thing at a time.

Slowly I stopped doing anything that was not bringing me joy. If I didn't want to do something, my answer was, "No!" without any explanation. "No" is a shortest complete sentence. Did you know? In the last year, I have changed my workouts, I have made my social circle smaller (it was already pretty darn small). I have stopped over-committing myself to make other people happy. I have gone back to being a voracious reader. I watch a movie at the cinemas each month, by myself. I reduced the time I spend on social media. In turn, I reduced the number of posts I publish. This is essentially the first 'real' post from 2018. I had not shot a single outfit post since Dec. 10th. Every post before this has been from backlog of last two years.

And for the first time, in the longest time, I am posting an outfit post on a Thursday instead of Monday. All these year I had been hell-bent on following a routine, thinking my readers would appreciate the consistency and what not ... Guess what? No one cares. So many times, I recycle content and post ages old blogs on other social platforms and no one even notices that they are from 2010.

So what is the lesson here? None. Do what makes sense to you in that moment and brings you joy. Rules and routines are meant to assist us live but not become our whole life.

  8. I agree! I am such a schedule and structured person. While they do help, I think it can also also make us become legalistic and set in our ways, asking ourselves if we are really happy! I am craving the freedom of just being - we should really do the things that bring us joy like you said

  12. An inspiring post! So many times, I find myself thinking too much about what others are going to think about what I post instead of just focusing on what makes me happy to wear and post. I love that you are breaking your rules and feeling happy!

  16. You do have to break your own rules from time to time. Get a fresh routine. In regards to reposting old content, don't discount that there may be persons new to your blog that have not seen the old posts. To them, it is new. You never know what may have an impact on those fresh eyes. :)

  17. Good insight. We build ourselves prisons and then live inside them.

  23. Awesome post. I sometimes feel like this. The decision between being discipline or just to let loose. Sometimes the rules just have to be broken and it should be ok . I like that you said it depends on the situation. This thing call life eh?? Just do what makes you happy. Nice outfit BTW

  24. Such an amazing post. At one point or the other in life, I agree we come to that stage where we want that peace and stability instead of what makes the life complicated and stops us from living it. I am still working on over-committing that sometimes kills me but makes others happy. Your outfit looks amazing, the shoes and that cute bag is so pretty. You are doing a wonderful job, I feel inspired!

  27. I agree. Sometimes, we have to do something that makes sense not now, but in the near future. Some things make sense delayed. Did I get that right? Haha. Anyway, I love this. Great motivational read.

  31. Amen to that! Giving myself freedom to blog whenever the heck I want has been nice! Sometimes I blog a few times a week, sometimes twice a month. Nobody cares except me..haha.

  33. I understand what you mean and it is a big transformation you are doing! I am all the contrary, not at all comfortable with routines and customs. I've HAD TO have very tight routines for several years to make things work when I was a full time employee and a full time student at the same time, with a working week of 80 hours there is no choice if you want to survive. But I suffered all along. I hate routine as it totally kills my creativity, and creating is what makes me the happiest in this life!
