Blogging Is One Dimensional

Up until 2013 I would have never described myself as 'funny' or even someone with a 'sense of humor'. In my head, I have always been a badass bitch. I always thought of myself as someone who is tough, and does not joke, and is rather a serious person. Although people around me often told me to stop calling myself a 'bitch' but I never really listened to them. Why? Because I never really listen to anyone. It just goes against my fundamental being. I was born to rebel.

It was not until my last job that I realized I might actually be sorta-funny (may be!). My previous work environment had a very casual vibe, where my boss and colleagues (mostly women) would take frequent breaks and talk about stuff. Random stuff - about politics, men, culture, food, fitness - what have you! Whenever I spoke out my opinions, my boss would be in splits with laughter. At first I didn't get why she was laughing because I was just sharing my honest thoughts, but then I started to notice a pattern with everyone I chatted with thereafter. They all would be cracking up and saying, "you are so funny!" and I would be thinking, "say what now?!". Later I realized, they did not mean 'ha ha' funny ... instead someone who says things the way it is but with fervency, which makes people laugh. Mind you, they are not laughing because it is spectacularly hilarious or comedic but because they couldn't believe that I really just said that! Politically-incorrect-sarcastic-humor, if you will?

This new insight about myself made me realize what I had not understood for a while. You see, I always wondered why people didn't get what I was saying sometimes on the blog. I always try and keep my writing simple and straight forward. So the break in communication always amused me. But then, just like that, thanks to my ex-boss, I got it!

The blog is pretty one dimensional and my sarcastic-dry-humor required four dimensions. So my new hypothesis about myself and my writing is that it is better if I write personal anecdotes which are in first person and written purely to share and not to entice a conversation or write about practical and straight forward things (like how to do this that and the other / informative posts). However, I should not attempt to be sarcastic or funny in my posts. Most of my readers 'perceive' me as someone who is serious (I am not) and pensive (I am) and unfortunately I am unsuccessful as expressing humor and lightheartedness through my writing. I guess, the point of this post is nothing, except if you wanna laugh, you will just have to meet me in person.

This outfit was shot just yesterday, one of my many simple Sunday looks.

    2. Reading this resulted in me losing quite a few brain cells. Will be careful to not repeat this experience.

  2. I love the dress! I would like to know why you think you are/were a "bitch".... Having a sense humor is amazing, it does give the great power of clicking with people and breaking very easily the ice when you don't know somebody :)

    1. Thank you! I was young. I think it was my way of self-preservation and not let anyone too close. That's the closest reason I can find. You are right. Humor is the best trait or quality. Makes social interactions easier and more fun.

  3. My writing doesn't often sound funny either. I like the backdrop of your last photo! Looks like a pretty spot to visit.

  4. Your Sunday casual is really on point, and you pull off round sunnies really well, which is not easy to do. I know some bloggers who are very good at being funny in their posts. Not entirely sure how they do it. I'd like to think that I'm funny and that that occasionally comes across on the blog, but I honestly don't know for sure.

  5. You know, I sometimes find dry humor to be the funniest because it's just so unexpected and matter-of-fact! So you're probably hilarious!

  10. I guess for those of us who do not "get" dry humor - it's just not funny. It kind of makes things a bit hard to read. You have adjusted your style however, so it flows much better now.

  11. I think you look cute and not badass at all. Humor in writing is very difficult i feel, but then what do I know i just write recipes ;)
I like your style and love the shade of lipstick tooz

  12. I haven been there, when people laughed when I expressed my honest opinion I personally don't like it. I guess its funny for them cuz they are not use to people expressing the truth to their faces. Love the dress by the way

    1. Thank you! And you are right, like they say nothing is funnier than the truth -- or something like that!

  13. Well thankfully some bloggers don't all themselves "writers".

    1. I am not entirely sure if you are implying that I think I am a writer, but should that be the case I would like to say I think of myself as a storyteller. And while not all bloggers (myself included) are professional writers, but they are still using words to communicate.

And if that's not what you meant and I completely got it wrong, then please ignore this reply! :)

  14. I'm very quick witted and sarcastic, so I don't mind dry humor. I think it's boring when people are all business with no personality on their blogs/sites. It's refreshing to know that there is a genuine human behind it. Some of these comments that people left are really rude, but keep progressing forward. Everyone won't understand you. Best of luck to you!

  15. Expressing humor in blog posts is hard to do without sounding forced/inauthentic. I love the way you write your blog and think your personality shines through regardless! I also have to point out that you have so much grace dealing with people who aren't very nice on your blog. I really admire that. Love the slip dress too :)

  21. i have always enjoyed your posts and stance on things. i may have not met you in person but it is weird but i have this voice in my head as i read your post :)

  22. I LOVE dry humour, sarcasm is who I am. It's hard to reign it in sometimes. Isn't it great when you can bounce off someone who is just the same though!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I am also the type of person that gets laughed at for my brutal honesty. I relate to this post a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I concur with this! And have foundation for my opinion since I've met you in person as well as read your blog for years.

In person, attractive aspects of your personality appear which aren't visible in your blog-writing. And one part of your writing which I was worried about happily recedes into the mix. In person, you are well-rounded and pleasant.

I'm sure this phenomenon happens to all of us. I've had some people remark, upon meeting me in person, that they expected something different from just reading my blog. Our blogs show part of ourselves, not the whole picture -- which is why I don't believe we really know someone until we meet them in person.

  25. Sometimes I said the darnest thing! Call it deadpan or what not ... it's a self-expression! I enjoyed reading your post. The backdrop of the beach balls are so pretty!

  26. I am sarcastic to a fault. Combine that with the fact that Im a lawyer with a resting bitch face, and people think im well... a bitch. Im not though. Im actually quite funny, my humour is just as dry as it gets. Oh and you dont come across as overly serious to me. Write as you are I always say :)

  28. I love your photos and your dress. I would like to think i am funny in my post but sometimes my readers don't get it but oh well. I've read most of your posts and they are always good.

  29. I like the dress! I also love dry humor, but I do think it can be hard to convey with words. I sometimes try to add humor to my posts, but I'm pretty sure I fail.

  32. I try to show more of my sense of humor in my blog. I was a Comm major & my focus was in Journalism. Sometimes I catch myself writing like I would for someone else. I try to remember to write my blog as if I were talking to someone in real life. Some blog posts show my sense of humor & some don't show nearly as much. BTW, I enjoy your blog. 😊
