Pop Culture - October 2015

I know that as much as you would love to keep up with the news and happenings in the world of pop culture, you just don’t have the time. I understand how busy life can get. So, here I am to your rescue with the monthly round-up of pop culture news in October, so you can be the most interesting person at a party. Well, that's the kind of cool readers Tanvi has.

  1. Cosmopolitan declares The Kardashians 'America's First Family'. The Kardashian clan or should it be clan with a K, appears on the November issue of vogue to mark Cosmo's 50th anniversary. And the title of the First Family given by Cosmo did not go down well with the twitterers, with people tweeting photos of President Obama and his family to Cosmo as FYI. And I am with the twitter-verse on this one. Cosmo, did you get the memo yet?
  2. Fish gape is the new duck face. We can breathe a sigh of relief and clean our eyes off of all those duck face selfies of friends on facebook. Fish gape looks a little more tolerable and adult-ish than duck face. Part your lips and learn how to fish gape like a pro.
  3. Anna Wintour is the queen of fashion. Gotta love her when she said she has never worn a hoodie, when she was presented with one while visiting the Facebook Headquarters. If hoodies and sweatshirts aren't good enough for Anna, it isn't good enough for us. Let's keep it within our homes, shall we?
  4. Who doesn't love Chrissy Teigen. She's the cool girl Gillian Flynn was talking about minus the psychotic behavior, of course. She announced her pregnancy and true to her keeping-it-real style that we have come to love, she talks about how much staging went into that pregnancy announcement Instagram pic. So refreshing.
  5. We live in a time where any goof-up or an awkward photo turns into memes. And that's what happened to Drake with his video of Hotline Bling. The internet went crazy and here are some of the funniest memes.
That's it for this month. Now, go impress your friends with the knowledge. You are welcome!

Contributor - Flo : She is a Seinfeld-quoting, trivia-loving, self-proclaimed funny girl. When she's not in front of her laptop catching up on the world happenings, she likes to travel, read, blog and cook. Exactly in that order. Find her here: Blog | Twitter

Three Ways To Style A Pencil Skirt

1 / 2 / 3
When I got this skirt, five years ago I wasn't sure about. I was going to send it back. Then I gave it a shot. And then another shot and now I love it. In spite of such a shocking color, I have been able to style it several time. The idea is to play with neutrals and balance the color.

Pencil skirts are flattering to most body shapes. They taper down to the legs giving your body and hour-glass shape. Give them a try and you will be amazing as to what they do for your legs.

Outfit & Travel Log - Oslo, Norway

Sponsored by Scandic Hotels

Scandic is the unrivaled market leader in the Nordics with nearly 230 hotels. As the Nordic region´s most sustainable hotel operator they are always focused on the environment and social responsibility.

We took the train from Bergen to Oslo, as we had heard it was one of the most scenic rides in the world and a must-do. While, I wasn't all that impressed with the train ride as I have seen better (in Switzerland and Canada) but I was impressed with the city.

Oslo, Norway was the last stop of our Nordic adventure. We spent our time in the city itself, visiting museums, trying local food and cafes. It was a rainy day which restricted our ability to take pictures (or videos) but he had a wonderful time nonetheless.

In the short time that we were there, we thought it was definitely one of the most cultural cities out of the three (Copenhagen / Stockholm) that we had visited. Like I always say, I would go back in a heart beat, only if I didn't have remaining world to cover. Scroll down to see the pictures from Oslo and hit play below for the last Travel Log.

Peak of Autumn

In the last decade an important lesson I have learnt is that it is not wrong to have an opinion, but to know when and how to effectively share that opinion. When I don't have an opinion on a subject, then it could be either because I haven't familiarized myself with the subject, or it is something that doesn't hold my interest. However, when I do have an opinion and I decide to share it, it spend a hot-minute to ensure that it is something that will add value to the conversation. Nothing is more redundant than adding noise to the environment.

Break the Rules: Here's How to Rock Fashion Blunders

Staying in vogue and up-to-date with current trends is not everyone’s cup of tea. Cracking the code to runway trends is a different ball game altogether. So what’s the easy way out?

Break the fashion rules.

Put aside all these years of conditioning and nay-saying. The key to being a fashion icon today is flaunting the fashion faux pas of yesteryear and adding your own personal touch to any outfit.

Here’s how you can up your ‘Wow Factor’ in an unconventional way.

All About That Print

via

What was once considered a fashion don’t is now trending globally. With designers coming up with more fun prints to play around with, mixing and matching has gotten more interesting.

Prints that are making huge waves are retro, tropical, Aztec, and animal prints. Coupling a bustier blouse and A-line skirt, or a shell top with a wide leg pants in the same or clashing prints will help you nail this chic look.

Sport This Look
via
Break the monotony of ultra-feminine dresses by pairing them up with trendy sneakers.

Sneakers offer more than a fashionable upgrade to your outfit, they define comfort and functionality like no other. Lace up a pair when you go out for a fun brunch with your pals or even a long evening walk - they’ll add an edge to any outfit you wear.

Wear your bright sneakers with a floral printed dress and conquer the preppy look with ease. You can also don pastel shade sneakers with a bright printed dress, or wear neon printed sneakers with a more subtle outfit.

Rewind And Re-Boot
via

Pairing boots with slim fit jeans or trousers is so passé.

Nail that perfect boho look by wearing leather or suede boots with a floaty maxi dress. Patent boots are great for outfits with layers, and you can combine maxi skirts and dresses in earthy hues or pastel shades with ankle-length boots. If your maxi dress is sheer, you can opt for thigh-high boots, which will accentuate your legs beautifully.

Revive The 90s
Jergens Wet Skin Moisturizer Tanvii.com 4

As a rule, the 90s were filled with fashion blunders that don’t deserve a comeback. With actors donning bright dungarees to actresses wearing gym tights with shiny satin dresses, it’s enough to make any fashionista shudder.

However, 90s make up more than made up for the clothing. Make up trends that failed back in the 90s like nude shades and frosted lipsticks are making a huge comeback this fall. The nude shades have evolved and are now available in a variety of matte and glossy tones. Frosted lipstick has become more muted and is now a great red carpet favorite.

Mixed Metal, Bold Mettle
Fall Layers Tanvii.com 3

If you can’t step out without matching accessories, you need a major makeover.

Playing safe is boring. Matching metallic shades is completely outdated. The key to thinking out of the box is treating all your metallic pieces as neutral. This gives you the space to focus on the textures and designs rather than on the color of the accessories.

You can wear gold, bronze, and silver bangles together to complement a cheerful sundress. You can even wear silver flats or carry a silver clutch when your dress has gold or bronze detailing.

Artsy Yet Trendy
via
This trend was actually started by an old man mowing his lawn wearing black socks and sandals.

Just kidding!

We don’t actually care who pioneered this trend in the mainstream fashion scene, do we? This style is a little tricky to replicate. Pairing sheer stockings with open peep toe sandals is not everyone’s idea of fashion.

You can pair shorts with some sheer charcoal, black, or brown stockings. Slip on a pair of peep toe wedges or stilettos. This look is ideal for a casual outing or a movie date with your pals.

Double The Denim
via

Nothing says high street fashion like an entirely denim look.

This is one of the oldest and boldest trends of the 70s that has become popular once again. Turn heads on a busy street in your boyfriend jeans and a denim jacket with a printed crop top. You can also wear a suede coat over a pair of wide-legged overalls for the perfect denim-on-denim look.

To upgrade your street style from grungy to edgy, all you need to do is accessorize right, using metallic statement necklaces.

Desi Designs, Western Appeal
via

If you love your ethnic prints but aren’t sure if they gel with western silhouettes, you now have an excuse to be bold and combine the two. Mix and match ethnic prints with western cuts for a great fusion look. For instance, you can pair a Kutchi embroidered scarf with a basic tee and jeans. You can also wear traditional jodhpur pants with a graphic print t-shirt or a crop top.

You can also take a cue from the young fashionista brigade and wear the customary Indian saree with a crop top. If you want to play it subtle, you can complement your maxi dress with Rajasthani chokers and chunky earrings or Jootis.

So what’s the wait for? Start off with your online shopping spree and own the blunders like a boss.

What's Your Style?

The festive season is right upon us and I bet everyone is busy shopping for new clothes for the celebrations or for the wedding season. Indian clothes are all about the intricate work, fabrics and brights colors. I have realized that essentially one can categorize Indian Women clothing in three categories. Starting with the most popular one:

LEHNGA
Lehenga, Festive, Weddings, Style, Ethnic, Tanvii.com
SHOP HERE: Lehenga
Lehenga is mostly styled same throughout the country, as is a traditional long skirt, paired with the choli (a short blouse) along with the dupatta (a long scarf). This is the most beloved attire for most women for all auspicious occasions in India like Diwali, Dussera, Eid and Navratri. And of course, wedding ceremonies.

Saree, Festive, Weddings, Style, Ethnic, Tanvii.com
SHOP HERE: Saree
Saree is a five to nine yards of cloth wrapped around the waist as a skirt with one end draped over a shoulder leaving the midriff bare. It is usually worn with a petticoat underneath and a blouse cropped right above the waist. While one would find most women in small towns and villages still wearing saree in their everyday life, int he metro is something saved for special occasions and festivals.
Salwar Kameez, Festive, Weddings, Style, Ethnic, Tanvii.com
Last but not the least, we have the Salwar Kameez or also known as - Kurta and Churidaar. It is the the most common Indian wear, especially because it is comfortable and easy to travel and work in. However, there are a lot of cuts and styles (anarkali) available in them or the ones which comes with embellishments which are popular for special occasions.

Usually women favor one more over the other. My style preference is Saree, for all occasions, big or small. I feel my best in them. But I know a lot of my friends whose preference will be a Salwar Kameez for most times, and then lehenga for 'really' special occasions, when they are looking to make a statement. Of course, there is no wrong answer. When you feel beautiful, you look beautiful. Right?

What would you pick? What is your style?

Three Ways To Style Black Ankle Boots

This is second week in a row that we are talking about boots. But can you blame me? It is the season of boots, so if not now, then when? Ankle boots, are my current obsession. They pair great with dresses (they would look phenomenal with this one) as they would with these boyfriend jeans. They add a right amount of edginess to a look while still keeping it classy.

I have been lusting over a number of them but I think I have the two pairs which will get me through this season. How about you? Have you invested in a pair this fall?

After having spent a wonderful week in Copenhagen and Stockholm, we made our way to Bergen, Norway. We were really excited about Norway, as we had heard and seen (online!) wonderful things about the country. And it didn't let us down.

Bergen was absolutely spectacular. A sight for sore eyes. We landed there early morning and took the bus into the city. We were greeted with views that simply took our breathe away. We spent our ways walking through the alleys, climbing the mountains, viewing this glorious sunset, among other things. This definitely goes on my list of most beautiful cities in the world. Don't take my word for it. Click on the link below and see it for yourself. Scroll down to see more pictures from Bergen

French Style & Minimalist Wardrobe

This weekend I gave away five bags filled with clothes, shoes and accessories to Goodwill. And I have another two ready for a consignment store. I have been downsizing this whole year, while adding only classic, practical and investment pieces to my closet. Some of my recent purchases have been a comfy and versatile duster cardigan, tan ankle boots which practically go with everything, dresses from my last two outfit posts (here and here). And that's all the shopping I have done and plan to do for Fall 2015 (The only exceptions will be more fitness wear.)

My aim for the past couple of years have been to create one of those minimal closets which is filled with investment pieces or with one-of-a-kind pieces which can be mixed and paired with each other. I am happy to announce that I am making continued success in that direction. And as it happens, this is sort-of French style of shopping (and dressing). I can't say where I got my inspiration but I am happy to be able to relate to French culture in this (and more) areas of my personality.

Talking of ... I had a fun podcast with my blogging buddy Flo on the topic of minimalist wardrobe and french style. If you are interested in eavesdropping on our conversation scroll down and hear it. There are some fun (controversial?) comments in there.

Moving on to today's outfit post, it is my easiest trick to transition my summer dresses into fall - wear them with a scarf and boots. However, looks like going forward the weather is not going to allow for bare legs no more! *insert sad face*

Three Ways To Style Tan Ankle Boots

Three Ways To Style Tan Ankle Boots Tanvii.com Famous Footwear Fall Style 2015
1 / 2 / 3
I have had another pair of tan boots, for past two years. I had styled them Three Ways here, and continue to wear them on casual basis. But my recent purchase has had me head over heels. I didn't expect to love them so much. I thought I am making a practical, everyday-wear purchase ... and then I started styling them with everything. All the time.

If you have to make a single purchase this fall, I would strongly advocate to make it towards a tan ankle boot. They are truly versatile and would practically go with everything. And since they are flat, you can easily walk in them for hours without a shoe bite or burn.

Outfit & Travel Log - Stockholm

Working on these travel posts is making me so nostalgic about my trip. I cannot believe it has already been a month since I got back. You can tell, I have been slow in getting through the pictures and videos. I wanted to do it right and organize it all in a way that I can find it even after years down the line.

Coming to the post, we arrived in Stockholm, Sweden via Eurail from Copenhagen, Denmarkon a rainy evening. However, that didn't spot up from exploring. We thoroughly enjoyed our romantic walk around the city. We spent the next two days exploring the city and enjoying everything it had to offer. We visited most of their historic sites, shopping streets, public parks, museums. But as always we loved the hidden nooks around the city and quaint eateries and coffee shops the most.

A dedicated post on what to do and what to see will be up soon, for now its the outfit and the video travel log

Do scroll down till the end to check out more pictures from Stockholm

LOUP Bruno Color-Block Dress via #IFCHIC24

I was recently introduced to IFCHIC.com. They host a wide variety of contemporary designers on their website like CAMEO, FINDERS KEEPERS, THE ROW, BIG PARK and ALEXANDER WANG. Their selection is so exemplary that I can easily spend endless hours browsing their website. It is a user friendly website, with easy to browse interface which only makes the shopping experience better. However, what makes them stand apart from other online designer stores is their #IFCHIC24 shopping event which happens on 24th of every month and lasts for 24 hours. During last month's shopping event, I bought the LOUP Bruno Color-Block Dress ($150) & C/MEO COLLECTIVE say it right shirt dress ($185). Check them out in the unveiling here

This is how IFCHIC Coins Work

- You can collect up to $6 per day.
- The coins can only be spent on the 24th of every month.
- You're enabled to save up to $180 per month on purchases during the #IFCHIC24 shopping event.
- These coins can't be used in conjunction with promotional codes.

The process of participation is quite simple. Log in to their website everyday, and browse the collections, during which you will see random prompts to collect three coins which are valued at $2 (per coin) totaling to $6 per day. To do the maths, if you log on to IFCHIC.com everyday for a month and collect all three coins on each day, you will be able to collect $180 worth of for a free shopping spree on 24th of the month. All you have to do is register and get browsing. If it sounds too good to be true, check it out for your self.

The next shopping event occurs on October 24th at 12:01AM ET, and I have my eyes on BLAQUE LABEL faux wrap romper ($128), C/MEO COLLECTIVE the otherside pants ($130) and CURRENT/ELLIOTT the infantry jacket ($268).
