My Reading Nook

Thirftbooks, Reading, Writers, Gone Girl, Gillian Flynn, Tanvii.com

If you have been a readers for a while, you know I love my books. I am not as ferocious a reader as I used to be, but I go through phases when I will get through 5 books in a week, or I won't touch one for 5 months. Summer, however, is a time that I associate with reading. It might have something to do with summer vacations from school days.

But reading is not just about books. It is also about unwinding and relaxing and diving into a world of your own. Which can't happen if you don't have a reading nook in your house, with a cozy vibe. You have already seen my rather grand book shelf, but my nook is nowhere close to the shelf. It is away, with a side table, and a stack of books which I plan to read or have recent finished and a bunch of soft pillows to rest (or lie down) on. I can practically hide-out in this narrow corner of my house and no one would know I am there.

I must be one of the few (at least in the US) who still purchase books. Like real books. That is only because I cannot wrap my head around e-books. I have a Kindle, and an iPad but I have only read one book on each of them. Making it a grand total of TWO e-books! I gave it a shot, you know, in the name of paper conservation and what not but I realized I need a physical book to actually enjoy reading. I will conserve paper else where (like no paper towels in the kitchen, or like by not printing boarding passes while traveling). I am glad I found Thriftbooks as it is a great online resource to find used books which are in great condition and at a fraction of the original price. For example, any title marked with a DEAL tag on the detail page is priced:

  • 2 books for $7.00
  • 3 books for $10.00
  • 4 books for $12.00
Another perk: Your orders are shipping within 24 hours and the shipping is FREE on all US Orders of $10 or more! How awesome is that?!!

Anyhoo, below are some of the books I have recently read. The ones from Thriftbooks are yet to be completed though.

Just For The Sake of Fun

This has been a crazy crazy month. And the craziness doesn't seem to be ending any time soon. Anyhoo, on topic at hand ... unfortunately I didn't get a chance to make a YouTube video this week.

With all the travel, illness, collaborations and meetings, it has been non-stop go-go-GO! But I have something fun and quirky this week for your instead - the infamous "Bloopers" video. It has been three months since I started vlogging and I thought it would be fun to share what happens when I ramble without thinking. :)

These are clips of my recordings from the moment I planned to start my YouTube Channel. Some of the footage is from the unseen (un uploaded?) video. I hope you get a good laugh, or at least a smile at my expense.

And as always, feel free to share your feedback or ask me questions in the comments below or via this survey / FacebookTweet / Email me.

Enjoy!

New York Every Season

Every since I started outfit blogging, all my vacations have had a daily agenda of "outfit shoot". No matter the location, there are always a few minutes kept aside to take either outfit shots or an #ootd mirror selfie. But this summer, I decided to break the pattern. I have been traveling for the past month, sans outfit posts. There are whole lot of instant travel shots, but none of the outfit. Except ... this!

This is the only outfit I shot, which wasn't even intentional or planned. Hence, the unglamorous hair! Also, notice the comfy footwear. I wasn't kidding, when I said I have been wearing these Skechers GoWalk, everywhere. All the time!

We were in NYC a couple of weekends back and that city just makes me smile and jump.

Last Days of Summer Family Fun

Family Tradition, Summer, Holidays, Mother, Daughter, Tanvii.com, #ohsofabulous

Isn't summer passing by too fast? I almost want to pack it up and save it for the brutal winter months. I know, that's not how weather works but no harm in dreaming right? In no time it will be back-to-the-grind for adults and back-to-school for kids. And before that happens I have been making the most of these warm and sunny days with my Mom. Going for walks, taking vacations, having dinners, exploring the city ... it has been quite a summer. Let's soak in all the warmth, shall we? (pun intended!)

Nonetheless, this summer has been all about comfort and simple dressing, head-to-toe. My new-love this season have been the Skechers GOwalk. They are comfortable and then some. I have been running around in them all summer without a single bruise or foot ache.

Check out Famous Footwear’s #ohsofamous gallery, for fun looks by women (and men). Also, don't forget to share your own looks as well!

Rakhi Ideas via OROSILBER

1 (Men's Jewelry) // 2 (Personalized Rakhi) // 3 (Name Jewelry)

Raksha-bandhan is little over a month away (August 29th, in case you wanna mark the date!) and it is just about time to start looking for something special and unique for our brothers. I personally have always believed that brothers deserve that as much love and pampering on this day, as the sisters. So while you expect your brothers to shower you with gifts, do not forget to return the gestures. (Equality, y'all!)

I was recently introduced to the store OROSILBER which specializes in personalized jewelry and accessories for both men and women. Today however, I am choosing to focus on my favorite pieces for men (aka brothers!) from few of their collections.

  1. Men's Jewelry - If your brother is a Salman Khan fan, then I bet he has already seen Bajrangi Bhaijaan (more than once) and would love this memorabilia from the movie. This would be a perfect gift your fan(atic!) brother.
  2. Personalized Rakhi - If you brother stays far away, like mine does then you can consider sending him a personalized Rakhi. Something he can wear even after and remember you fondly every time he wears it. Heck, you can even gift it if you live in the same house. At least it wouldn't untie or look weird on his wrist the next day.
  3. Name Jewelry - Now, if your brother is older and not someone who can wear jewelry to work, like most grown up men (fingers.crossed) this is the perfect gift for him. You can get personalized cuff links, something he would be able to incorporate in his work life without any hesitation.
I hope you would check out OROSILBER for your gift needs and do not just stop there. They have a great collection for women as well. Both domestic and international shipping options are available.

How To Keep The Spark Alive In Marriage (YouTube) - Reader's Question

How To Keep The Spark Alive In Marriage, YouTube, Tanvii.com

It is Wednesday, which means time for the new YouTube video. And I am back with the third Reader's Questions today. But before I get started on it, I wanted to thank you all for all the suggestions that you send in. I read them all, and would love to make a video on all your suggestions. Some, like beauty and hair do requests, will take a while as I am anticipating a greater production time and resources. And if you know me, you know I do not like doing anything half-assed. Having said that, I am especially loving all the thought-provoking questions, which make me ponder and force me to figure out my thoughts (and opinions) on that topics that you suggest. And this week's topic is one such, on marriage! :)

Feel free to let me know your questions or/and your thoughts in the comments below or via this survey / FacebookTweet / Email me.

P.S. Do share your name and email with your questions. I would love to mention you by your name in the videos! :)

Give Your Legs and Wardrobe a Lift!

Difference between leggings, jeggings, and tights, Tanvii.com

Sometimes all it takes to give your wardrobe a lift is a few accessories and some strategic purchases. If you really want to pep up a tired wardrobe, but don’t have a lot of cash to commit think about adding just a few pieces to update what you already have hanging in your closet. Leggings – either solid or printed – can be a great addition to your wardrobe provided you wear them the right way.

What’s the Difference?

You might have heard the following terms used interchangeably, but leggings, tights, and jeggings are not the same thing. Let’s break it down with some help from the Times of India;

via
 Leggings: Think “pants light” and you’ll have it just about right. Leggings are heavier than tights and can go with a high or low rise. They are opaque but still thinner than your standard pants, and if the fabric is thin enough, they can show more than you would want them to.

via
 Tights: These are made from a thicker fabric land that cover the foot and go up to the waist. They can vary from slightly transparent to completely opaque, patterned, textured, or even fishnet.

via
 Jeggings: This is where it gets more confusing. Jeggings resemble a pair of really skintight jeans, and are often referred to as skinny jeans, even though they’re not. The fabric is a print that resembles denim, but has a lot of Lycra in it to give it that sprayed on look. The simplest way to classify jeggings from jeans is that there are no pockets, no buttons, and no zippers. The name is a squish of “jeans” and “leggings.”

Do’s and Don’ts

There are lots of places where you can get pointers on the do’s and don’ts of leggings for all seasons as well as fashion stores like Habbana that sell printed leggings online in India. No matter what your taste in print is, right one can spice up everything in your wardrobe. But wearing it the wrong way can not only be unattractive, but even uncomfortable.

 Don’t wear leggings as pants since the material can be thin enough that it can show skin or underwear.

 Do wear leggings under a cute skirt or dress that you would otherwise think is too mini or with a
pair of shorts. This can help you take shorts and high hemlines from being a one season item to being a three season item.

 Don’t wear leggings with a short, tight top unless you have the frame for it. For curvier ladies it will simply highlight the curves that you might not wish to. Durbanzone recommends against sucking and tucking; if you want to rein in your excess curves, stick with Spanx or other shapewear.

 Do buy leggings made from thicker fabric and test the stretch your fingers. These will last longer, and often look better than cheaper leggings made from thinner fabric. The Guardian recommends that you buy the best quality that you can afford commenting that leggings in good fabrics look elegant no matter what you’re doing from walking the dog to taking off on an international jet set jaunt.

Which one is your favorite?

No Make Up Casual Look

I often read these Cosmo-ish articles about celebrities with No-Make-Up, I also hear the term "no-make-up look" thrown around in the beauty articles and I always wonder what is the big fuss about ... because (as you all might already know) make-up has never been a (big?) part of my daily life. On any given day I look like I do in the pictures below. It never crosses my mind if my scars are showing or my dark circles are visible. I just step out. Another reason is that I am a klutz. I like touching my face, rubbing my eyes, and just being a basic two-year-old without having to worry about my face looking like a war-zone. So the bottom line is that no-make-up-look has in fact always been my unintentional go-to-look, whether it is in fashion or not!

Gabbing With Tanvi (YouTube) - Episode Seven

About My Childhood, YouTube, Vlogging, Gabbing With Tanvi, Tanvii.com

This episode of #GwT was shot on the same day as this outfit post and since my Mom is visiting me currently, I thought it would be interesting to have her in one episode and give Dr. Fab a break this week. If you are a regular reader, you have seen my Mom on the blog several times in the last six years.

She was introduced for the first time in 2009 here, and ever since she has made an appearance on the blog almost every time she visits me. (This is when I gave her a make over, this is from our travel diaries, this is when she leaves and I feel abandoned!) But what I have never shared is her interaction with me, or how strict she was as a mother, and how disobedient I was (am!) as a daughter. You can catch all this and more in this week's episode.

Also I would like to thank you all for your constant feedback on the videos and the suggestions regarding what you would like to see more. I am working on all your suggestions. I appreciate your time and your patience.

My True Love - Krispy Kreme

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Tanvii.com 5

One quality characteristic you might not know about me is that I am a loyalist. I do not commit to very many things, because you know I always want to retain my right to change-my-mind but if I do, then you have a fan, a customer, a friend, a supporter for life. And on that note I am loyal to Krispy Kreme

I first time I ever had a Krispy Kreme doughnut was in London, at my cousin's place. And with that first bite I was hooked. Back then it was not retailed at any grocery store. Hence, you had to make that special trip to Harrods, stand in a long queue (where they gave you a free doughnut! Y'know for being loyal enough to wait). Pretty soon that became my weekend ritual. Instead of going to a temple, I went to Krispy Kreme at Harrods. Soon after they opened one at Selfridges (which was more on my way) and slowly as various retail outlets which only made my life easier.

Twenty years later, I am still loyal to them (and only them). I refuse to even try any other doughnuts, because no matter what anyone says they never taste as good as Krispy Kreme. On July 10th, it was Krispy Kreme's 78th Birthday and in spite my health, I made a trip down to the nearest store and tried their Birthday Cake Batter and the Brownie Batter doughnut. And to say that they were delicious would be an understatement. If you are a doughnut lover, like myself, I would strongly compel you to try them both. You would thank me! ;)

Jumpsuit Encore

Is it Monday already? Of course it is. I don't know where the weekend went. Oh, but I do. It went in pain and misery. I have been suffering from a 'probable' bacterial stomach infection for the past week and trying to keep it together. It is the most frustrating feeling when you know you live a healthy and active life and yet you have equal chances any the next unhealthy person, of falling sick and suffering in pain! :(

Anyhoo, the outfit is from a recent visit to Georgetown to devour some delicious cupcakes.

Why Women Should Travel Alone

Couple of months back, I was all alone for two weeks after almost a decade.

I would like to believe (and my mother would back-me up) that I have always been an independent-confident girl (woman, now) ever since my childhood. I didn’t know a single soul in my college before I joined, and I made it through without very many friends. Then I went on to work in the big-dazzling city of London and lived alone in a studio apartment and never felt alone or lonely. But ever since I got married, I have never been alone (per say) for more than say 24 hours. My husband is always there with me, and if I am traveling without him then either I am going to meet a friend or some one or other is accompanying me.

So when he shared his plans to visit family back in India I volunteered to stay back ... for several reasons. One of which was that I wanted to be by myself. I wanted to enjoy my own company and I wanted to know how life would be if I was (ever) all alone.

To add to the adventure of living alone, I decided to take a weekend getaway all by myself. I found a great deal on Living Social for Hillbrook Inn in West Virginia, making it the 26th U.S. State I have visited (24 more to go). I checkout out the property and researched the neighboring areas. It was only a couple of hours drive away, which was perfect for me as I hate driving. I saw there was an adventure park on the way. I decided to stop by and spend a couple of hours there. The park had jungle-gym kind-of activities such as zip lining, rock climbing, rope climbing, etc. It was not for the sissies. It was pretty-darn-hard-core. But it was a blast.

After spending couple of hours jumping, hopping, climbing, - I was exhausted. I headed to the quaint-little-Inn with great anticipation. They greeted me with a welcome drink and macaroons, both of which were delicious. I checked into my room, which was absolutely splendid. Relaxed and read my book for sometime and then headed for my spa appointment at the Inn, which I had pre-booked. After a relaxing hour long massage, I went back to my cosy and comfortable room, read a little again, and then went out to explore the property. In the evening I drove in to the city and had a meal for one at the exotic Mediterranean restaurant which also had live music. After a delicious-and-filling meal I drove back to the Inn and called it a day. Next morning I woke up early (as usual) and went for a run around the property, enjoyed their unique breakfast options, read my book on the hammock, sat by the swing, and enjoyed my company like never before. It was definitely one of the most relaxing weekends of my life.

In the last couple of years I have made big strides to do things which are out of my comfort zone. Taking a trip alone, all by myself has been on that list for the longest time. While the weekend getaway probably doesn’t really count, (my husband would say otherwise) I think it was an exhilarating experience. I would highly recommend some solo time with no agenda, (work-trip, conventions do not count). It is one of the most empowering activity I have undertaken. Traveling alone will make you realize your strength, help you over come your fears and get you hooked on to wanderlust, if you weren't already.

You can check more pictures from the trip here. And if you would like to keep up with my travels in real time don't forget to check me out on Instagram
