How To Make Your Nail Polish Last Longer?

Are you someone who changes their nail paint 3-4 times a week? Or just about once a week (or so) is plenty? If you fall in the later category (like myself) then this post is for you. I usually pick a color for the week and stick with it. I really don't have the time for multiple-self-manicures ina  week. (By the way, how are these woemn who have that kinda time. Don't they have to eat-sleep-and-make-an-earning?) Anyhoo ... do give this tip by The Style Dossier Blog a try and let me know how it works out, K?
nail polish, diy, make it last longer, tanvii.com, vinegar, opi, essie
You know that (naked) feeling you get when you aren't wearing a purse. We pretty much get that feeling when our nails aren't painted. We love any tips we can can get for a lasting mani. This tip is easy and definitely worth it! Just a swipe of white distilled vinegar and BAM! you have a lasting manicure! If y'all have any nail polish tips send them our way, we'd love to try them out.

10 Random Things On My Mind:

- Life is SO F***ING short and unpredictable. Remember the radio show I had mentioned just recently? The lead anchor of the show, Kidd Kraddick, passed away this weekend. I feel I like I have lost a family member.

- Netflix ROCKS! Must watch 'Orange is the new black, is you haven't already!

- Jen Kirkman is my hero. If you are an open minded individual then you must read her book.

- I am discovering my inner comedian. People keep laughing while I am talking. So unless they are laughing AT me, I think I might be funny y'all! ;)

- I have been having this same breakfast for last 7 months. I cannot believe it myself.

- I think I need me a few Maxis. This one looks pretty darn good.

- I will be attending Texas Style Council next weekend. If you are around, do come and say Hello!

- I was recently interviewed by Startup Corner. You can read it here, if you like.

- Kate really looked lovely with her new born in that Jenny Packam dress, didn't she? ... talking of which ... check out this blog

Reader's Questions Part 3

fitness, workout, weight loss, tanvii.com

Question: Why were you overweight? Had a stressful situation led to overeating? Was it genetic? What factors led to the fact that you were a weight at which you didn't feel comfortable?

I was overweight because I had unhealthy eating habit and absolutely no form of exercise and zero physical activity. I was a lazy couch potato and had no inclination towards any form of sports either. I liked my books, television, and writing neither of which required me to move my ass!

And then when I moved out of home and went to college I mostly relied on snacks instead of real food. Eventually when I started working I continued to eat on quick & easy food instead of cooking something myself.

Although, I had a very supportive circle of friends and family who never made me 'feel' fat but I definitely felt uncomfortable when I went shopping and had to try everything in 'big/large' sizes or when I saw skinnier/fitter girls and felt terrible about myself. I never felt confident and was always over-concious of my existence altogether on this planet!

Question: What made you decide you wanted to lose weight? Did you just want to be slim? Was it a health issue?

I have answered this question in numerous posts. I wouldn't mind repeating it again but wouldn't it just be easier for me to direct you to those posts? [
Lazy, eh? I know, thats me!]

1. My Fat to Fit Journey
2. My Fit to Staying Fit Journey
3. My Happily Ever After

P.S. I do not have a problem with the word 'fat'. I never did. It is hurtful, but so is overweight/healthy/chubby and all the other synonyms. However, people who have excess fat stored in their body which makes them overweight are called FAT! And I WAS FAT. Period!

Question: How do you manage to stay motivated?

I don't have an accurate answer for that except, "If you are too lazy to workout, then you do not want it bad enough." And I want it really badly. I like how I feel after I work out. I like being strong. I like being able to do everything on my own. I do not want to be ill, or dependent, or weak (You can read remaining of the list here.) And strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will. Will-power is like a muscle, the more you train it, the stronger it gets.

Question: HOW did you do it? How long did it take? What habits did you have to change?

This question is also answered on the above mentioned links but to summarize it I HAD TO CHANGE MY LIFE! I started with working out 7 days a week and eating only salads & vegetables ... and slowly I reduced the workout to 4 to 5 times a week and increased the food to everything in moderation. I am still not my perfect self [I would want to be and stay at 18% Body Fat!
] but travel and life keeps coming in the way of me and my abs! *sob.sob*

Question: Can you suggest some exercises?

I cannot suggest anyone anything, because I am not an expert. I do not want to give you any wrong information or cause you an injury. However, I have time and again shared my workouts on the blog. You can find them all here. What I can say is that start with small goals. Start with something you enjoy (walking, dancing, sports) and then when you reach a point when you feel you are ready to challenge yourself try doing workouts which are out of your comfort zone. Always consult a trainer/doctor if you have any other physical/health issues.
If you have a fitness related question, you can ask it via the form here. Do take a moment and read the below posts to make sure I haven't already answered it. Have a good weekend!

Skirting the Issue

Do you get bored of answering the question on your birthday and anniversary or even new year's eve - "What's the plan?" - "How are you celebrating it?" - You know what, I am not celebrating them any more! - The pressure to do something on these so-called-special-days is so much that I am now practically averse to doing anything at all. Instead, I choose to celebrate in advance and or not celebrate at all. Chances are I would be in bed before midnight on my birthday and new-year's eve ... and Anniversary? We celebrate every weekend. O! The little-rebel that I am.

Last I wore this tank on the blog was more than a year ago. How time flies!

How to choose the cut and style of blouses for sarees?

Saree, blouse, wedding, tanvi, diwali, india,

The other side of the world is in an arrest of wedding fever and since the wedding industry is at its extravagant best hence innovations, inventions and creativeness is bound to sweep you off your feet. Though the biggest question as always is, "What to wear?" so on a reader's request I decided to pen down a few ideas mainly about the cholis/blouses:

Saree, blouse, wedding, tanvi, diwali, india,

Crop tops has been the biggest obsession lately around the world, but Indian women have practically been donning crop tops in the form of blouses, since centuries now. Though with the change in the International fashion scene, the crop top blouses have taken a new, edgy avatar. Pair these blouses with chiffon sarees for a Cocktail or Sangeet party and you are all set to turn heads.

Saree, blouse, wedding, tanvi, diwali, india,

Bows have been another obsession and we can see them everywhere from dresses to skirts, tops and accessories. Men too have started to opt for the bow tie route giving conventional ties a much awaited rest. 'Bow Mania' has also enveloped the ethnic wear! A bow like detail on the blouse or salwar-kameez easily becomes your answer to something different.

Saree, blouse, wedding, tanvi, diwali, india,

'Old is Gold' is the most common saying and so don't hesitate going the old way with waist length blouses with elbow length sleeves. If you favour the style but feel that its too old school, back cut outs will earn you good grades on the style quotient.

How few designers come up with amazing ideas is intriguing and I was stunned how Jyotsana Tiwari came up with a blouse with a high-low concept at Ambey Valley- India Bridal Fashion Week. The detail might not be too visible when paired alone with saree but my mind keeps making a picture of the Indian outfit incorporated with this trend.

Saree, blouse, wedding, tanvi, diwali, india,

Jackets over lehngas and sarees has become a great craze too and is slowly replacing the regular lehnga cholis. Only risk here is that you may find many people sporting similarly styled outfits at the same event!

Saree, blouse, wedding, tanvi, diwali, india,

Hope you would find this helpful!

Looking Back

You might have noticed I have been spending a lot of time looking back at my old posts and even though it has been four years I still feel that I had written them just yesterday. And as it happens, my views and opinions on several matters haven't changed. AT ALL! I find that weird. Don't you? Shouldn't they have changed a little bit with time? The explanation that my Dad offered was that I mostly write about fundamentals and life and not about people and my thoughts towards them. According to him only the later changes often. That sounds like a good explanation. I am gonna go with that! (:

Hope everyone had a good weekend! I did too.

Spoon Fed Generation

Is it just me or are we living in a colossal world of "spoon-feeding”. It is one thing to have a ‘genuine’ question it is quite another to not use your brain at all. I cannot tell you how many times in the day I want to tell people, “JUST GOOGLE IT!” What is worse is when the information is right there but they do not bother reading it and are too quick to question first. I have despised being questioned ever since I was a child. But ignorant questions just make me want to poke my eye-balls out.

I would go to moon-and-back to find the answer before I ask ANYONE anything. 99.9% of the times Google knows the answer and the other 0.1% I choose to ask my husband or parents first before questioning the outside world. Bottom-line is that I manage to find the answers without bothering very many people around me.

... so ... figure it out people! Life is not that big a mystery. Most of the answers are out there! Really!!! *Phew!

I have been a long time loyal user of Aveda products and I am yet to be disappointed by one. I have mentioned few of their face products here, and these are few of their MANY hair products I have tried in the last decade. As you already know when I find something good, I stick with it and stop looking any further. P.S. Mantra for life, too!

Why I don't follow your Facebook Page?

... or your Twitter, or Instagram for that matter ...

For probably one of the two reasons:

  • Its repetitive. Chances are you have already connected all these platforms with one another and if I follow you on any one social media platform I am definitely going to get that update. Current craze being Instagram pictures on Facebook. So why should I bother following you Instagram when I know I will end up seeing that picture on Facebook? Don't get me wrong. It is not personal. It is a simple way of de-cluttering my life and staying on top of what is relevant. Every platform is different and people expect different things on each of them. Respect them. Personally, the only social media platforms that I have inter-connected is Facebook to Twitter. But I am already re-analysing on whether I should disconnect it and have 100% authentic content on all social platforms
P.S. If you are going to cross-share content, then at least be selective about it. Make sure there is a valid reason why something is being exponentially shared across your virtual life. And also, so that people following you on different platforms continue to have an incentive of doing so.
  • It is not interesting. Again nothing personal but we all are on social media to find interesting content and fresh perspective, without the two it is plain waste of time.

The most common excuse people would have is lack of time to feed fresh content to each social medium. Fair enough. Then try and sign up on only as many platforms as you can 'genuinely' handle, because otherwise you are only taking your audience for granted and sooner or later you would run the risk of over-exposure or over-sharing.
This post was a follow up from the statement I had made here and was asked to elaborate on, by several people.

Beach Mode

Do you guys listen to radio shows? I don't mean just music on the radio but different shows that come on it? Well, I do. I LOVE almost all the shows on NPR but my current favorite is the morning show on a local station called "Kidd Kraddick in the Morning". I love the hosts of this show. They are all mad and talk about random anecdotes from their lives. Super entertaining and funny. They put me in the right mood while I am on my way to work.

... Which brings me to the post as it got me thinking how they can mention incidents with people from their lives (friends, family, baby sitters, etc. etc.) on radio and never get in trouble? I cannot even mention an anonymous incident without worrying about if I will have people breathing down my neck about it. Don't they have such worries? I mean they talk about stuff far more embarrassing and controversial on their show than what I have ever written on the blog. I guess they get paid enough to bare that trouble or everyone they know is way too understanding. Right? What other explanation would there be?

Anyhoo, this is the last outfit from the trip!
Come next week and it would be all about Texas and its boring locales.

Read & Relax

So I was talking to my brother and telling him that people keep asking me, "How do you manage to stay so motivated through-out and why do you take up such tough challenges in the first place?" I told him I didn't know the answer to those questions. I guess, thats just the way I am. How do I explain that? (He too is the same, by the way!) - He had a few theories about it:
A) We have inherited the 'NEVER SAY DIE' spirit from our parents. Dad loves to take risks of his own and Mom has over-all very high standards and expectations (from her kids, especially).
B) We ourselves have a pretty high self-esteem which doesn't allow us to let ourselves down.
C) And most importantly: We are awesome.
I guess he has got it right. The correct answer is:  D) All of the above! (;
