November 2013 in Review

... and with this we have reached the end of 2013 polling! I know you are wondering what about December? Well, believe it or not, I posted only ONE outfit in December. So nothing to poll about. Either you loved or you didn't but that outfit had no competition! Ha! (:
November looks a bit eclectic, no?
P.S. October had A LOT of outfit posts, eh?  #8 was the most popular and #10 was my favorite!

Throwback Thursday

That's me in third grade!
I have recently got in touch with a lot of my junior-school class mates. One of them had posted this picture on her Facebook wall. It brought back so many memories. I had to have it. She was kind enough to scan and send one to me (Thanks Divya).
Well go ahead and have a laugh at my expense. I do not mind at all! I am just amused by the fact how innocent I look. (:
P.S. Have you seen me as a toddler? I was darn cute even then! :P

Spiced Tomato Soup

Serves 4

For roasting:
4 large tomatoes on vine, cut into wedges
1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
pinch of salt and black pepper
4-5 cloves of garlic, halved

For soup:
1 tbsp cooking oil
1 brown onion, minced

1/2 tbsp roasted mashed garlic
1-2 chillies (serrano peppers), finely chopped (optional)
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1/2 tsp coriander powder

1/2 tsp za'atar powder (optional)
1.5 cups vegetable broth
1/4 tsp black pepper

6-8 fresh basil leaves, chopped (save few for garnish)
Salt to taste

- Preheat oven to 325F.
- Spray olive oil into a roasting pan.
Place tomato wedges, sprinkle salt and black pepper and toss it all together.
- Drizzle oil onto a palm-sized foil. Place halved garlic cloves and wrap it up into a parcel. Place the foil in the same roasting pan as tomatoes.
- Roast for 45-50 minutes.
- Take a large pan. Add oil. As the oil heats up, add onion and garlic and cook until translucent.
- Now add the spices and chillies. Cook for a minute and then add the vegetable broth to the mixture.
- Add the roasted tomatoes, garlic, chopped basil to the liquid. Add salt and black pepper to taste.
- Turn the heat to low and and allow the soup to simmer for 10-12 minutes and thicken.
- Using an immersion blender, puree soup until smooth.
- Ladle it into a bowl. Garnish with fresh-chopped-basil leaves and serve!

Inspiration: Over-Sized Tartan Scarves

It is just me or are these oversized scarves everywhere you look except when you are out shopping/looking for them?! I have been on a lookout for an oversized tartan scarf for the longest time. One can style it from day-to-night in a number ways and stay warm at the same time (I hope!). While I continue to search for it high-and low why don't you check out some of my inspirations!

Rebecca Minkoff at Saks in San Antonio #RMroadtrip

Yup! This ↓ happened yesterday. I was one of the four bloggers who got an opportunity to meet Rebecca Minkoff. She was such a delight. A total sweetheart with a heart-warming smile and killer gams. She has been on a road trip around the country #RMroadtrip for the better part of this year signing her bags and basically being her-cool-self!
I remember couple of years ago when I was contemplating getting it. I tweeted with her handle @rebeccaminkoff and ... she replied!!! I could not NOT buy it! I have not regretted it even for a moment. I love my Minkoff ever since I got it. I have got a good use out of it too (as proven). May be its time for another one? (;
All in all it was a fun evening. I got to hang out with Jenna, Sarah, Jenny and Joanna, have champagne and desserts and of course hangout with Rebecca! P.S. Got featured on her Instagram too.

Bare Legs in Winters

I haven't been writing my thoughts here lately. I feel I do not need to write/share them to get clarity any more. I can just sit back and think-the-heck-outta-them and achieve the same results. Or may be I do not want the outside world to know what is going on in my head. I go through phases; when I want my life to be an open book and I do not mind anyone taking a peek into it and at other times when I want to take my book inside the covers and read it on my own. I might be in the later phase right now.

I wore this over one of the past weekend when the sun decided to come out

for a short while. What a relief it was to let me legs breathe!
They are back in wraps now though!

Inspiration: Messy Bun

I have been living in messy buns for the last couple of weeks. It is too cold to do anything else. That also explains the dearth of outfit posts on the blog. I have no idea what has gotten into me but I simply cannot be bothered to pose when its freezing outside. But rest assured you are not missing out on any sartorial experiments. I have been dressing up pretty much how I have dressed in the past winters. Layers. Layers and more layers. So thats that. Hope everyone had a good weekend!

Eight Best Foods To Eat Everyday

I can proudly say I love to eat 7/8 items listed below. Carrots are the only ones that I like to eat when they are cooked 'Indian' style and/or as a soup.  Everything else I LOVE and definitely eat 5 days of the week if not seven. How about you?

How To Style Chunky Knits

For the longest time I believed that I could not wear chunky knits. For one, there is that word "chunky"! Who the hell ever wants to be associated with that in any way at all? But then I realized to survive the cold temperatures I need the chunky knits or I would be left with two options: 1) Die 2) Wear 10 layers on top of each other. Neither of those options seems practical.

Below are a few ways I have learnt to incorporate the chunky knits in my wardrobe:
  • Layer the hell out of them. If you don't wanna look like you are out of an eighties movie, you better layer them. You have the options of wearing a longer button down, a quilted jacket on top or ever topping it off with a blazer.
  • Play with silhouettes. Since the upper part of your outfit is chunky (duh!) keep the lower part streamlines with skinny jeans, leggings or a pencil skirt. Pairing oversized-with-oversized 9/10 times makes you looks like a garbage bag. And no one looks good in a garbage bag. No one.
  • Pair them with boots/high heels. These are probably the finishing touches but it really pulls the look together. And regardless, boots look good with EVERYTHING. Yes, they do. I don't care what you say!
  • However, feel free to accessorize with a scarf. Wrap a light pashmina or a silk scarf around your neck and strut like a wannabe-french-rockstar!
  • Lastly, keep the knits limited to just one clothing item per outfit. Anything more you run the risk of looking like a furry bear. 'Nuff said!

Inspiration: Necklace Layering

I cannot stop staring at these pictures. Which is kinda inappropriate 'coz it means I am staring at a woman's chest (essentially!) but you have to agree how effortless this layering is. Done to perfection.
… and apparently all you need a white-button-down and sh*t-load of necklaces to look effortlessly-boho. Point noted!
