Shopping Ban: Why? What? How?

7:00 AM

Firstly, W.O.W. I didn't think there were so many people out there who were on the same page as me. I have to say I have never been this excited about shopping, as I am about NOT SHOPPING right now.

Just to clarify for the cynics out there, I do not condemn shopping, it builds and nourishes the economy after all. I just wish to keep things in perspective (for myself). I often joke with my husband that I have enough clothes and shoes to sustain a small country. While, it is a bit of an exaggeration but I do have enough of everything that I do not 'need' to buy a new piece of clothing/shoes/whatever.

I, however, do condemn the stigma attached to repeating clothes, needing something new to wear to every party, having things in the closet with their price tag on and yet complaining about having nothing to wear and just mindless shopping for self gratification or shopping for the sake of having-everything-everyone-else has.

Imposing a ban gives a break to the mind and forces you make most of your existing closet. While sometimes the temptations try and take over your sanity but staying strong gives your a greater sense of achievement later. Not to mention the money and time you save you can spend on date nights, movies and family. If you wish you join us in the 'shopping ban', you can do so here.

Things that are banned
- Clothes (all kinds!)
- Shoes
- Accessories/Jewelry
- Bags/Purses/Clutches
- Cosmetics
- Electronics/Gadgets

Things that are allowed:
- Food
- Water
- Home Supplies
- Medicines
- Toiletries (shampoo, soap, etc.)

  1. I just have to say - this is an awesome idea!!!Like you said, it'll really help us divert ourselves and seek other options for entertainment. A question - how do we progress with the ban? Do we post weekly updates and link up here or something? It would be nice to know how the others are carrying on with the ban - good for moral support!!

    1. This is all happening quite spontaneously. I haven't figured it all out yet, but I think weekly link ups would be a good idea to to see each other's progress. I am open to suggestions too.

  6. It's a great idea! I'd like to join but it's sales season in Greece now so I might shop a couple of things. I practice "smart" shopping though: buy things I really need (like a new white bra because my previous ones are already worn out of a pair of knee high boots, as the pair I currently own is more than 4 yrs old). I read a book once by Judith Levine documenting a year without shopping. It was interesting I admit! Good luck with your ban and I'll be inspired to shop as little as possible (want to save up for yoga classes which are a tad expensive!)

  11. As I already mentioned to you on twitter, I'm gonna do it! Had already made a personal decision to not shop (and not drink) for whole month of Jan. I plan to extend the shopping ban to end of Feb now. So we'll have 1 month overlap :) I think it'll be good to do this - it will teach us to really evaluate what we need versus what we want.
    Excited!!

  12. Well written post!
Very motivating. I have started this ban earlier but havent beent successful so far. something will come up somewhere which I will think is worth spending the money on. I am a sale shopper!so cant resist good deals.
But this time I am going to try.
I am also going to mark on a calendar each day I did NOT shop.
This has helped me in some other ventures, like exercise. So hoping will help me in shopping too!

I am so lazy to shop and actually detest malls! The entire last year I shopped one time and that too before going to India. But, good luck for your challenge! I am sure you will excel! :)

  14. I was on shopping ban on Christmas time, to avoid supporting the consumerism surrounding the holidays nowadays. It was so comforting to see I really don't need the shopping. It's still fun for me, but I learned to walk away from temptation. Now my challenge is to throw out everything I won't wear out of the closet (I'm too attached to the pieces and can't bear to throw them away, which is stupid!) so that I can get more up-to-date/multifunctional items in. :) I think a shopping ban is a healthy reality check every now and then. It makes you more creative, and saves money. :)

  15. Oh God, when it comes to shopping (and food), my willpower is zero. ZERO. I shop for entertainment and just for the heck of getting new things in my possession. Kudos to you for taking up this resolve!!

  16. ooh comments! yay! I never login to FB so that's why you never hear from me dear! ;) I've been fed up with shopping myself. Actually wanting to spend my time on decorating my house. Although being in the fashion/beauty industry it is quite hard to completely close the doors on it for me. I've vowed to invest in more meaninful pieces this year, less froth so to speak. Couldn't we all just live off the fats of our exploding closets! xx - Taj

  19. Great Idea! I am glad the January sales are over before I came across this post :D .. But I will start from today will have a shopping ban on myself for a month. If I live through that I will keep extending the ban by one month till I cannot take it anymore. I hope to be able to go like this till August which is when the next sale season starts :) Wish me luck!
