This is the outfit from Sunday evening and I was wayyyy too lazy to dress up!
So, please excuse my drab look!
Winters have arrived by the way, and Kendi allows you to wear jacket without a penalty ;)
Out of the total of 15 grandchildren I was the only one who had the privilege of learning (or rather being taught) by my Grandfather. He was an English Teacher and enjoyed teaching grammar and literature. Every day after he came back from his job [as a teacher/Principle], and took his afternoon nap, he would call me and have grammar-practice sheets ready for me. I was almost 2 classes [grades] ahead of my classmates as long as grammar was concerned. Also, felt very sly about it. I had heard about Shakespeare and Thomas Hardy from the age of 6 if I am not wrong. I am also the proud owner of my Grandfather's inheritance - His Books, published in or before 1950's. I couldn't believe no one else in my family [of 30 people] wanted them. Sure the pages are yellow, and the binding is barely holding it together, but they are my precious possessions.
He always said that languages were meant to help people communicate effectively and express themselves, not to 'sound' intelligent. I distinctly remember that he always asked me (but I struggled) to keep my sentences short and avoid using 'and' 'but' 'also', unless absolutely necessary. Even today, his words are engraved in my brain - "Write in order to be understood." If you can say something in a sentence, do not write an essay about it.
I have gone ahead and applied this lesson to my life in general as well. I dislike long discussions and arguments. Its my life's mission to constantly strive to improve the silence. Else, shut up! By the way, my poor grammar and/or writing skills do not reflect upon my Grandfather in any way! That is all my own doing *hangs.her.head.in.shame*!
And before I forget - Guys, my lace up boots (25) [seen here] didn't work out. I had to return them back 'coz it didn't look like they were for the long haul. Hence, I have replaced them with these Burnt Red Boots for my 30 for 30. From here on these will be #(25).
Find me on Facebook.
Haha no way honey, you're good in your own way!
ReplyDeleteAnd about the look, I think it's just me maybe but a simple, non-worked up, raw look is the freshest to me. You don't look drab at all. Love the whole look!
I can totally relate when you talk about your grandpa. Mine was a school principal and my granny was a school teacher and so the family has been insistent on literature and language ever since. Fortunately, I could gather not just English, but also Gujarati literature knowledge from them all. And for a language lover like me, that's a boon! :)
Awwww...sounds so amazing, learning from your grandfather. Mine had a hugeeeee library full of wonderful and facsinating books. I inherit my love for books from him.
ReplyDeleteAnd missy you don't look drab at all! Love them boots and the jacket is fabulous!
Love the look!
ReplyDeleteYour story reminds me of my friend's story about her grandmother who was a Hindi instructor and also passed along her great grammar.
How cool that you have your grandpa's books!
Love the post, not only coz of the look but also coz of your personal anecdote :) For a lover of books like me inheriting the family's books is the best thing ever :) Besides the yellow pages and that musty smell just add to the excitement quotient :)

I am no fashion lover but still love the way you dress yourself. I like this post especially because I can match here something with myself "The proud owner of my grandpa's inheritance". Keep Rocking!! Keep Smiling :)
ReplyDeleteO yeah! Thanks for the grammar lessons.. I am worst at that front.. Need lots of improvement ;)
ReplyDeleteWhat a privilege, Tanvi. Your granddad sounds like a very intelligent, educated man. I'm sure he would be proud of your writing which is always to-the-point!
ReplyDeleteLovely stripey sweater!
If only people would understand what effective communication is and not use big words, jargons and come straight to the point
ReplyDeletelife would be so easy,I have no patience for such people and sometimes I interrupt people and very rudely ask them so as to what do they want to say,I know it's not nice of me but there is only so much a person can listen to.
you definitely don't have poor writing skills and grammar is fine too,
cute outfit
At least you put colours in your Sunday outfit, it looks cheerful and fun!
ReplyDeletexx
To me you look unwell or may be you were not in your cheerfull mood. What so ever you carry the outfit very smartly.
ReplyDeleteyou have been priviledged to spend time and learn fm Grand-parents.
Books are the asset.
Well.....I think the love of writing was imbibed in you by your Grandpa himself.....so, in a way, we all should THANK him while reading your fabulous posts! Also, the details on the jacket are way too interesting.....& the boots are awesome!! And last, but not the least (pardon the use of 'and' & 'but'...I don't know any other way of using this phrase!), you rock in every way girl.....even when you are sporting a clean & not-made-up look!!! :))
ReplyDeleteThis is your lazy look? Man, I need to up my style then. Look's awesome though
ReplyDeleteThat's a lovely inheritance. I should say, your grandfather has done a pretty good job with your writing skills.
ReplyDeleteWhat drab???? Lovely outfit for a weekend.
u luk cutesy!!
ReplyDeleteOn my own I think I learnt this lesson (of grammar & life) quite late...I think I grew up with believing in long winded sentences, till I read something so simple, and powerful, that I realised the immense attraction it held, and decided to go by it. I try, not sure if I am there. But I know I try. You're a lucky girl, to have had the time with ur grandfather :) and you've got nothing to hang your head in shame for! I am sure he'll be proud of you!! :)
ReplyDeleteI think that is so cool that you inherited your grandfathers books. You do write very well. Those boots were my fav! I love you new boots as well. Hope you're having a great day so far.
ReplyDeleteLove reading about how your grandfather's influence instilled in you an appreciation of languages as what they are rather than as a 'to-sound' or 'to-be'. Clear and succinct is what I aim to be often, but definitely fall short!

ReplyDeleteThat is a very interesting idea. I like that quote from your grandpa. :)

ReplyDeleteTanvi,
ReplyDeleteThe best post from you among all I read. Honestly I am jealous and proud of you at the same time. I wish I had inherited some books like you did and I am proud of you as you use the knowledge/wisdom gained and admit it.
Your linguistic skills are excellent - not just grammar. But my judgment is simply based on:- I am able to quickly read your posts and get the point and details. I always liked reading you even though your posts are full of excellent pictures.
I love this outfit, I think striped shirts will always make an outfit look preppy chic! And I am in love with your nose ring! How long have you had it!!??

"...improve the silence..." or else shut up. Wow! I LOVE that!
ReplyDeleteAlas... brevity is not my forte, particularly when writing... my editors have always had a 'problem' with me overwriting!! Speaking wise...
Your grandfather... he passed on his depth of character too obviously... gosh, I am so awed by the many facets of you...
Hon... you and I have so much in common... your grandfather... my father... he is the reason why I was 15 in my last year of school... I had skipped 2 grades because I could read perfectly by 5and recite shakespearean soliloquies by 8.... AND I inherited my father's first edition rare title books. !!
I have kept only the not so financially valuable ones but they are of priceless sentimental value. The extremely valuable ones I sold because I could not do them justice, keeping them carefully, etc. I do have my father's old dictionaries and encyclopeadias...
[oh dear... now that I'm old and senile... all I can remember is last week's shopping list... :D]
Yes. You look drab. As drab as a rainbow after the rain has stopped and the sun has come out!!!!!
Tanvivacious... you can never look drab. I say that honestly and with truth.
I'm sure he would be so proud to see how you have managed to find your voice in writing.
